Cleaning

Oriental rugs are very easy to maintain. A little simple care will go a long way in ensuring the life of the rug. The rug's greatest enemy is grit which settles into the nap. Grit has a hardness factor second only to a diamond and it will cut the woolen nap and greatly reduce the life of your rug.

History

During the past century, the Oriental rug has become valued throughout the world as a work of art. With its rich history and color, the Oriental rug often is called the aristocrat of carpets. Although the Oriental rug of today may not soar through the air like the magic carpet of Arabian legend, the Oriental rug does perform magic, transforming interior spaces into extraordinary spaces.

Repairing

Genuine Oriental rugs are made of wool, silk, or a combination of wool and silk. Rugs of wool are more durable and wear longer than synthetic fabrics. Wool is more resilient, cleans better and stays clean for longer. Newer rugs seldom need repairing. Old antique rugs, at times need to be rewoven where areas are worn out.

Tutorial

Perhaps the only thing that all real Oriental rugs have in common is that they are woven by hand. Oriental piles rugs are constructed by first stringing warp threads, which will run the length of the finished rug, onto a loom. Weavers often choose cotton for the warps, particularly for larger carpets; because it stretches less than wool, cotton can be strung on the loom more easily and evenly.
